People often ask me what it is like to be Asian-American. I say, "What's it like to be an immigrant? What's it like to be one of the first generation to grow up in America?" And I realize that this question is all too common, and I realize that people want to know what it's like to be an Asian-American because they're scared of the possibility of hating each other. The possibility of not understanding each other. The possibility of living in a place where you don't speak the same language and where food isn't your mother's cooking.
And then you come into that place expecting to live in America, but instead you find yourself in America, but living in America. It's too much pressure to put on the first generation who are trying to find their way. What about you? What do you think about when you think about Asian-Americans?
